Portrait photography with expression

Portrait photography is about revealing character and expression in a people. A good portrait photographer must be able to establish contact with the person in front of the camera, and possess empathy in others.

Jeroen Bouman is such a photographer. "Every portrait is a challenge. By opening up myself, people quickly feel comfortable around me and show their true self easier. That definitely results in better portraits. I will never claim that I reveal peoples soul in my photos, but if just something of it shows through I'm satisfied. Even if it's just a tiny fraction."

"Thats why you'll often see me using a tripod. It allows me to control the composition very precisely and then focus all my attention on the subject. No more nervously jumping around, and you can stand beside the camera instead of hiding behind it. It automatically creates more space for bidirectional communication."

Jeroen is based in The Hague, but shoots portraits in Amsterdam and Rotterdam on a daily basis for clients all over Holland. He prefers to shoot people in their natural surroundings, but a portable studio on location is also possible.

"I consequently use extra light when shooting portraits, even outdoors in bright sunlight. It may be a bit of cumbersome carrying the extra equipment and setting up the lights, but it does allow me to fully control the expressiveness of my portraits."
