Black & white portraits, photography with more space for personality

Ever since the invention of photography in 1839 by Daguerre, photography and black & white have been inseperable. Even today black & white is still the very basis of photography, and especially when it comes to portrait photography.

Photographer Jeroen Bouman: "Colour can distract immensely from the essence. In a black & white portrait, only shades of light and shadow remain, automatically providing more space for the subjects personality to surface. Old-fashioned? Definitely not. But you have to watch out for false nostalgia (read: über-romanticism). That's a killer, for me at least."
