Architectural photography on Mt. Everest: a toilet with a view

“I had planned to leave my camera at home so I could focus all my attention on the trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. But a colleague managed to talk me out of it. During the first two weeks I didn't take a single photograph and I cursed him many times because I had to drag the 6x4,5 camera with a supply of 120 film up the mountain. As if the trek wasn't hard enough already.”

“Then all of a sudden, my eye fell on these toilet cabins that popped up in the strangest places. Completely at random, or so it seemed. The toilets created a maddening contrast against the spectacular landscape of the Himalaya: the flimsy build quality against the eternal mountains, ugliness against the beauty of nature, and the stench against pure mountain air.”

“At that moment I just had to start documenting the contrast. It resulted in a rather unique series of architectural photography. I photograph continuously and with passion. Also at great heights."
