They are everywhere. You'll see them along the highway, in the woods, on a vacant lot, on your own street. They really are everywhere, and they come in many shapes and sizes. They ensure that traffic lights work as intended, regulate the water levels in canals, or distribute the fiber optic signal to your home. They are indispensable to keep the world turning. And yet, no one sees them. They are just so out of luck, finished in their anonymous beige or dull gray. To prevent them from standing out. Distribution cabinets.
They act as a common thread in this series, but then again they don't. For they will never, ever claim the leading role. Distribution cabinets are far too humble and modest for that. But give them some space and attention, and BAM! Then you realise that they do indeed have a place in the landscape, that they help shape the environment.
Look closely —look beside the boxes— and allow this series to become etched into your memory. Wherever you go, from now on you will never be able to unsee distribution cabinets.
Schakelkastjes
Ze staan overal. Langs de snelweg, in het bos, op een braakliggend terrein, in je eigen straat, echt overal. In allerlei soorten en maten. Ze zorgen dat de stoplichten functioneren, regelen de waterstand in de sloot of verdelen het glasvezelsignaal naar je huis. Ze zijn onmisbaar om de wereld draaiende te houden. En toch ziet niemand ze staan. Het zit ze ook niet mee, uitgevoerd in anoniem beige of saai grijs. Om maar vooral niet op te vallen. Schakelkastjes.
Ze vormen de rode draad in deze serie, en toch weer niet. Want de hoofdrol zullen ze nooit of te nimmer opeisen. Daarvoor zijn schakelkastjes veel te nederig en bescheiden. Maar biedt ze eens wat ruimte en aandacht, en BAM! Dan zie je dat ze wel degelijk een plaats hebben in het landschap, dat ze de omgeving mede vormgeven.
Kijk aandachtig -kijk vooral náást de kastjes- en laat deze serie zich in je geheugen etsten. Waar je ook gaat, hierna zal je schakelkastjes nooit meer kunnen niet-zien.
